ROCK SUTRA is the new space-rock album from Sun Araw. Space: and how to make it. “Roomboe,” the first track, illustrates this process. Experience is elastic. Humans alive right now tend to think there is some sort of “baseline” experience of a thing, a room, a person, a feeling, some version we all agree on. This isn’t true at all: experience is completely dependent on the quality of attention of the experiencer. There is a granularity to experience that, when tuned up, reveals deeper and deeper space inside of things. When you zoom in (by pure observation: by not-articulating, not-thinking), you create “room,” you make space. Just like that.
For instance, “Roomboe” has an extremely limited tonal framework; about 9 notes for the main guitar melody. As the guitar pushes against these melodic limitations with continually renewed attention and energy, it begins to create space around itself. And all of the sudden (at about 4:57), out of this constriction, space balloons up from everywhere simultaneously, whoosh! And where did it come from? That’s a very interesting question. All the time as humans we feel trapped by limits which we didn’t set and don’t control. “Roomboe” is a clue about how to open a portal outwards into free space.
This is a space-rock album with 4 songs. “78 Sutra” is about orbital motion. “Catalina” is about taking a walk. “Arrambe” is about a peculiar feeling you can get when you zoom in far enough. To understand more about what I'm saying you're going to have to listen to the record. The music is offered in a spirit of generosity and adventure; it doesn't stay put, and it keeps zooming in to reveal more and more. This is so you can zoom in and experience “feeling-without-articulating” for yourself, which is better than reading about it here. The album was recorded live-to-midi with the band, this is the first Sun Araw album recorded like that. That band is Jon Leland on drums and percussion, and Marc Riordan on synthesizers, and Cameron Stallones on synthesizers and guitar and vocals.
POLONIUS - SON OF CHECKMATE ETERNAL WARRIORS [SA064]
An inter-locking prog-device from the mysterious Polonius! Clicking and whirling through its various mechanisms, carrying the listener through mysterious chambers filled with strange intelligences. Trans-dimensional motley adorns the sylphs that accompany your intricate wanderings through the thrilling clockwork that continues to assemble and dissassemble the Checkmate Universe. Do you idyll in the gardens? Or do you press forward to capture the Rook? Polonius asks you.
DUENN + GALAXY EXPRESS 555 - SPACE & THINK [SA065]
Drifting microscopics from this pairing of Farstad and Fukuoka’s DUENN, feathering and fluttering like ten thousand tiny lenses straining to autofocus. Glimpses of bejeweled climes dart in and out of view as the the space in (and around) these compositions distends and lists sideways in the breeze. High level deep listen.
VHW7 stands for VELOCITY HOLOMATRIX WARP 7. This music is also featured in its totality in the virtual reality immersive digital visual-sonic experience designed by Theo Triantafyllidis & Sun Araw. You can download the 'game' here: slimetech.org/VHW7/
Glistening towards you across a dewy field: three small pennants, waving joyously, announcing: Oz Vibes. Frogs amarch, 636584 have created “Eye of Newt:” a spellbook of soggy acetate bursting with the fullness of sparkling and impossible medieval joys, each robed in the best of Australian Melted Casio flavor. A glimmer of a spirit that's gone missing in an age of conceptronica. Entrepid jams! credits
KHAKI BLAZER - CONTENT WITH THE HOLE YOU FELL INTO [SA062]
Khaki Blazer is Content With the Hole You Fell In, but are you? An album of half-remembrance: smeared, dissolving as you listen, coming apart as soon as it contacts your ears, but revealing something. Revealing what then? A slow, clarifying motion. Wheezing, hissing, refracted lines, faded wallpaper, the sounds of warm upholstery. It’s coming from inside the house, non-cosmic, sonics wholly absorbed by our daily-daily strange milieu, but with such a melting of plastics that press the otherworldly fumes in on all sides. Top notch Khakis.
ROB MAGILL & TATSUYA NAKATANI - LIVE IN THRUTH AND CONSEQUENCES, NM [SA063]
You already know what it is. Absolutely impeccable live session featuring Rob Magill in equal parts soulful and blistering alongside master percussionist Tatsuya Nakatani who needs no assistance getting it across with class on gongs, drums, and all manner of bell. Recorded live in Truth or Consequences, NM. If only we’d all been there.
A mysterious bandolier of wrongfoot jungle ingots from Estonia’s most cloaked producer, Ratkiller! Tacky Whack is 5 slugs of over-heated breakbeat explorers, crawling with strange determination, leaving blistered and bewildering rhythmic sludge in their wake: the more you lean in, the more it leans back! Take the helm, steer over the edge, plunge, and get lost in strange alloys; half-melted exotic tungsten fumes will threaten your hull, but fear not! The scrub is burning, the asphalt is scorched, but Ratkiller’s aim is true, and you will find yourself only slightly singed. Unmissable 2019 vibes!
Kansas City’s Barbara B. arrives with 9 sizzlers, white-hot sheets of noise spreading and buckling into surprising and inventive textures. Opening with supple flutters (Fruit) and ending with something like the smelting of raw lead (Games), Sports provides an expansive, doom-laden, and emotionally engaging listening experience of real depth, suited for those looking for the deletion of the horizon. Buckling fountains of metallic resonance, hot-stinging synth spray, groaning magnetic fields vying for negative dominance. Strong stuff!
Profound bell-tones from Japan’s Akhira Sano, sparkling with tiny electricity, this is one of the most delicate and detailed ambient albums ever received in the Sun Ark dock. These 11 sonic investigations continually expand and contract in scale, revealing endless (sometimes deeply alienating) dripping, hypnotic, crystalline structures hidden in the grains of soft pulses growing rounder and rounder. This one is a real treasure of contemporary ambient, giving more to the listener with each spin, creating shocking depth-of-field against a softening bacterial landscape that blurs as you approach.
Exquisite manipulated and arranged field recordings from Myste & Phil French, the duo behind the legacy avant-garde cassette label STUNNED RECORDS. Their first new work since 2012, "Landcestors" bears light from time spent in mineral, fungal, plant, and animal kingdoms. Evidence of direct contact with the land and that which animates it, it's "good news."
Serum is made of 5 small electro-acoustic systems: slender gears feathering in complex geometries. Aylu designs audio spaces from Buenos Aires, mostly known for her potent, psychotropic juke and footwork experiments. Serum is a departure into freer and more diffuse compositional territory, and it is precisely a serum: 5 audio objects designed to bring the mind out of anxious confinement into broader space.
AIR TRAFFIC CONTROL QUARTET - BLUE RASPBERRY [SA054]
Found sliding through Culver City in obscure melodic vehicles, Air Traffic Control Quartet sidle and hoot thru mazes of harpsichord voicings, low-level tom-tom storms, and catatonic film-chase musics. Looming melodic figures sinking deeper and deeper into their chairs, until Nika Kolodziej’s alarming contribution of crystal vox humana clarity in a deft working of “Nature Boy” on Side B. For dullards and dynamos alike! A Sparkling Debut!

Galaxy Express 555 is under glass by Christopher Farstad with some guests; big shuddering waves of Digi-Synth Work that break apart slowly into compositions of great subtlety and photographic depth. The title is a reference to the famous work on photography by Vilem Flusser:
"The photographer’s gesture as the search for a viewpoint onto a scene takes place within the possibilities offered by the apparatus. The photographer moves within specific categories of space and time regarding the scene: proximity and distance, bird- and worm’s-eye views, frontal- and side-views, short or long exposures, etc. The Gestalt of space–time surrounding the scene is prefigured for the photographer by the categories of his camera. These categories are an a priori for him. He must ‘decide’ within them: he must press the trigger."
addendum: Chris Farstad has broken forth into the west, eastern information of such a high quality that it literally melts all your brains, with his BIO-VITA series, do yourself a profound favor and check them out.
SAMULI TANNER - MUSIC FOR 1- YR OLD SAMULI TANNER [SA050]
Samuli Tanner of Finland (Siihhi, Myttys) hath wrought upon this 1/4" tape (with analog and digital instruments) a dripping slag of entangled orbits he has titled "Music for 1- Yr Old Samuli Tanner" which is just great as far as I'm concerned. It's a very thorough variety of distinctly off-kilter modalities, they are some engrossing and supremely weird rides, young Tanner woulda come out extremely melted.

SK KAKRABA - YONYE [SA038]
YONYE is the first vinyl release of Ghanaian Master of the Gyil SK Kakraba.
SK Kakraba Lobi is a Master Xylophonist from Ghana, the son of Master Xlophonist Kakraba Lobi. SK is a Master of the Gyil, which means that he is both an instrument maker and a virtuoso performer. The Gyil is the Ghanaian Xylophone, and the primary instrument of the Lobi, Sisala, and Dagara people of Northern Ghana. It is constructed of 14 wooden slats suspended over calabash gourds that have been fitted with resonators.
SK has recently moved to Los Angeles, CA and YONYE is a compilation of solo recordings made here.
IN HIS WORDS:
"The songs on this album are Lobitraditional music from Ghana, but they are recorded here in California. The album is called Yonye because I have traveled and seen different life, different things. The music is traditional songs, reacting to what I have seen here."
The road curves down the way and becomes grassy at the middle of the fork in the road. A flower appears. It opens the doors to our new begin-ning. The shape of these doors covers the road with slick unknown aspects of love. The ghost above the road smokes its own physical touch to awaken the old man. “Excuse me,” says the old man, “who might you be?” The ghost says nothing but responds with a look of mystery. The old man continues, “My name is Igor. You seem to blend into the road.” Forming another touch, the ghost blows out the forgotten thought. Igor then looks the other way to feel his own memory. The flowers surround-ing the doors become high in the mountain. The tradition falls upon Igor as love creates its physical shape.
The first vinyl release from Composer, Arranger, and Bandleader Rob Magill! A meditation on Stravinsky and his feline relation. LP comes with 8.5" x 11" booklet of original poetry and drawings by Rob, and the 1st 100 orders receive bonus cassette "Nobody on the High Mountain."
S. Araw "Trio" XI is a new configuration of the Sun Araw Band, the live-action collaborative branch of Sun Araw. Over the course of several studio dates in Hollywood, California, "Trio" players Cameron Stallones, Alex Gray, and Mitchell Brown (with no prior intentions of doing any such thing) successfully planted a garden of "non-dimensional" objects, not only spontaneously generating these objects but also mastering their nurture and cultivation. And You Can Too!
Gazebo Effect is a 2xLP nocturnal stroll into the depths of the garden, its upper lawns and outbuildings. The listener is advised that as the objects have been "set growing" their location at any given time is difficult to predict. The Garden cannot be exited by the path it is entered, the angles involved being extremely precise. These factors (and others) clearly illustrate the value for oneself (and others) in the building of an observational structure: The Gazebo. However, it must be understood that the presence of this structure has a transformative effect on The Garden Itself.
In other words, the "Gazebo Effect" is a music production system that allows a performance to be obstructed & (thus) interpreted while it is being played. What a Savings!
S. Araw "Trio" XI is
C. Stallones - Midi-Guitar, Ensoniq Mirage
A. Gray - Computer Synthesis, Bamboo Saxophone
M. Brown - 1/4" Magnetic Tape, Yamaha CP35, Roland System 100 Synthesizer

WANDA GROUP - A MAN MOVES OUT OF HIS SKELETON C30, ed. of 100 [SA041]
Wanda Himself has been extracting thistled, obsidian slabs of field-recording based ambience from his human experience since 2012 when Wanda became the most active moniker of experimental musician Louis Johnstone. Over-the-moon to be presenting one of these obelisks on Sun Ark, A MAN MOVES OUT OF HIS SKELETON is a florid, pearlescent bit of patience; hyper-tactile environments, delicately processed, that blossom startling, enormous sheets of synthesis at precisely the right moments. Presented on a lucid white cassette.

CAMERON STALLONES & NICHOLAS MALKIN present "MUSIC FROM HARVESTER," COMPOSITIONS FOR FARFISA VIP345 & GUITAR 2xC40, ed. of 150 [SA040]
Not since the regal, wobbling transmissions from the SOHNI CHAMBERS have these two been present on tape together. The occasion: creating a score for visual artist Abbe Findley's film "HARVESTER," a compendium of footage of harvesting machines from around the world. In a special, softly-carpeted chamber procured just far enough off a dirt road in Joshua Tree, CA, the two cloistered themselves for several days of organ and guitar explorations fueled only by hot-plate burritos and date shakes. On this double cassette, dear listener, find the monumental results: bleary but startling, dynamic compositions that wander in all directions through a fading golden light, consistently subverting the sonic limitations of the simple instrumentation. Ranging from sublimely pastoral horizontals to increasingly unnerving non-Euclideans, there's something here for the whole family. Truly a "large-scale work," recorded on cassette, and presented on 2 gold cassettes.

PEDRO MUTHASHIP - TEN REVOLUTIONS OF WRONG C40, ed. of 100 [SA042]
Sir Muthaship is only the latest vehicle of reliably seasick sea-captain Pete Hope. A sweated hand upon the 4-track, he guides the unmarked sloop from one steaming, disreputable port to another by wan moonlight. What emerges when the shore-haze finally lifts is a cassette of Ten Blues, funny little boogies that must describe what the cybernetics are up to in the lamp-lit driftwood shacks that lean seaward out of the shadowed mangroves. A busy little series of shakes, for when shakin' is the quickest way out. A series of stuttering revolutions that put the "fun" in "malfunction." Presented on a tar-black cassette.

A.C. BAND/SADISTIC CANDLE - ST/ST 2xC40, ed. of 100 [SA043]
A double album almost three years in the making, Barrett Avner (Black Bananas, Sic Alps, Sun Araw Band) returns to solo recorded work with a double-double. In the classic "two-sides of" conceit, Cassette 1 offers Mr. Avner piloting A.C. Band through a series of sensitive rock tunes with chicken shack guitar squawks worthy of the best Hagerty compositions, acoustic jangles worthy of F.J. Mcmahon, and harmonized solos worthy of Thin Lizzy. The sound of a chili-dog exercising Emersonian self-reliance. But then! Cassette 2 presents the return of SADISTIC CANDLE, now with bombastic double-down reverbed Schoolly D 808s and boogie synths building scaffolds for face-melting Maggot Brain solos. The sound of a giant, cartoon basketball sneaker on the loose. Together this double-album functions as a tribute to Barrett's grandfather Chuck Avner, who founded and ran the Ohio men's fashion boutique Man Talk Intl., which served Cleveland's swinging, funk/boogie scene. Both albums are presented in collaboration with the spirit of Man Talk Intl., and with its blessing. Truly, a mix of music this explosive and strange could only come from one man, and that man is my genius friend Barrett Avner. Presented on 2 mustard yellow cassettes.

SUN ARAW - BELOMANCIE [SA033]
"Visions of Pears & Dice fill my mind when I'm w/ You"
B E L O M A N C I E is the 7th full length album from Sun Araw.
B E L O M A N C I E is series of corridors that lead to specific chambers.
B E L O M A N C I E is designed to be an active listening experience.
B E L O M A N C I E is not designed to accompany existing environments.
B E L O M A N C I E is designed as a transportation system. It is recommended to give
B E L O M A N C I E your full attention, and to listen at the highest volume that is comfortable on high quality speakers with a pronounced stereo field or on an excellent pair of headphones.
Interference is physicality. When faced squarely, each chamber produces a particular physical effect capable of causing a simple thing: an experience of discontinuity. Hot Jobs!
and there is nothing visionary
nor ecstatic here,
only recognition;
The Celebrate Music Synthesizer Group is a spice-hunting collective formed in Rotterdam in the Summer of 2012 when multi-media cultural center The Worm graciously opened their world-class synthesizer studio to the current incarnation of Sun Araw Band. Cameron Stallones (Sun Araw, Magic Lantern), M. Geddes Gengras, Tony Lowe (CEO Raw Tings), and Butchy Fuego (San Gabriel, Boredoms) spent a week amidst Syrinx, Serge, and Surinamese victuals, tracking the self-titled double album live to 2-track. The parabolic fruits were charted, graphed, and have been presented on a double vinyl album as follows. Please join us and, "Celebrate Music!"
ON PATROL, originally released in 2010 and now available again on vinyl, is a double album in two parts, and the 4th full length album from SUN ARAW. An album for heavy-steamin' late nights in the city, inter-dimensional back alleys, ghost cabs; it creeps and tunes in on a much darker, sparser, and more classically minded channel than its predecessors: dark and deep steam-vent ruminations on Phil Cohran, lenticular objects, and fried Hot 92.3 R&B slow-jams. A cold bug makes a real "live wire."
ANCIENT ROMANS is the 5th full-length album from SUN ARAW
Primal Splendour, who sends out innumerable rays, not perceptible by the senses, but collectively thinkable.
Heartfelt and marbled, this album is documentation of the slow exit (the triumphal entry): moving the camera back 8 stages along the circumference of the circle to the point where the obverse is reverse, in order to celebrate the building of an edifice, and then walk away from it in wisdom, gaining freedom from it. An internal revelation of external fact.
ANCIENT ROMANS is available as a 2xLP on white vinyl in a gatefold jacket with an accompanying art book, as well as a CD.
RANDALL McCLELLAN - THE HEALING MUSIC OF RANA [SA034, ed. of 200]
Randall McClellan was a founding member of the electronic music studio at the Eastman School of Music in 1967 where he later received a Ph.D. in Composition, Theory and Musicology. A growing interest in North Indian music and vocal technique prompted him to develop his personal compositional practice into an active platform for inducing altered states of mind. He constructed his concerts to be spaces for harmonization of mind and body through a musical practice informed by his esoteric studies of ancient mystery schools and sacred geometry, believing these to be primarily teachings on intentional resonance.
Compiled with the assistance of his friend J.D. Emmanuel, this 4 cassette box is the complete recorded works of Randall McClellan, previously issued as individual cassettes, as well as a lecture on the relationship of music and esotericism with synthesizer accompaniment entitled, "The Healing Power of Music." Includes digital download code!
ROB MAGILL - WHAT ABOUT THE MAYBE?,
[SA035, ed. of 100]
Rob Magill is a composer of experimental jazz and folk, accomplished bandleader, talented painter, and powerful saxophonist. "What About the Maybe?" is a series of attentive melodic explorations on saxophone, guitar, organ and drums. Remarkably focused, revealing a patient glimmer, and erupting only when absolutely necessary.
Longtime PDX heroes of abstraction and free musics, Cloaks is found currently spic and sparklin', spooling tidy compositions of extreme digital synthesis and acoustic marimba. Cloaks is Spencer Doran and Ryan Carlile, and the B Side of this tape is a concert-in-full, recorded at Mississippi Studios.
HIGH CEILINGS - HIGH CEILINGS,
[SA037, ed. of 100]
HIGH CEILINGS is a trio of afternoon canopy-gazers, fur coats in cardboard. Los Angeles melon-inflation expert Mitchell Brown presiding on 1/4" reel to reel and Serge Modular, Future Farmer Dave Saymek on electric piano, and just plain Cameron Stallones on analog synths and guitar. A document of several bleary afternoons in East Hollywood.
from INNER TREATY era, innovative DUCK DIVE design! What does he think he'll find down there?!
WARM CLIMATE - SUMMER SPEECH THERAPY,
[SA031, ed. of 150]
Another slithering from Seth Kasselman's WARM CLIMATE, with heavy rocksteady lifting from M. Geddes Gengras and Caitlin Mitchell. "SUMMER SPEECH THERAPY" is, as always, a heady conflagration of modes and tones from snap-tite mid-70's psychedelic rock to ambient wormhole clatter, beyond-all-reason concrète flickers, and back again. Voyages that reward ambitious listeners, music made by ambitious voyagers.
Oakland-based EL TOPO delivers unbelievably righteous, vital free-jazz sweatlabs, stripped to sax and drums except for an incendiary cameo by Isaiah Miller of Earthless-fame. The stops and turns are on a dime, endlessly unspooling around fresh corners with forceful delicacy. True stolen base leaders.
PATHWAYS is Michael Sholtz of otherness-noise theremin trio FARADAY TRIPPERS. Here rather than joining far-sighted brethren in mystical oscillator movements, he is bent solo over vast, curling sheets of guitar. Perfect twilight meditations with stakes planted on both sides of that barrier.
TURBAN CHOPSTICKS - MEXICAN FOOD,
[SA025, ed. of 150]
Born in a trance of Adelaide swelter, bánh mì, and Candyman, "MEXICAN FOOD" represents a blistering sesh down under: Cameron Stallones, Tony Lowe, and Alex Gray, two guitars and drums, no pedals. Made possible by and dedicated to the greatest Australians: Stacey & Rani who showered the voyage with herbs, fresh fruit, and good vibes. Word has it, after this recording was made everyone went out and lifted a car!
DRAINOLITH - AIN'T NO SUNSHINE,
[SA020, ed of 150]
Tangled, pummeled poly-rhythmic blues from AIDS WOLF alumn Alexander Moskos, headstock scratching the floor, feet pounding. Deeply felt and deeply numb at the same time, somehow scorching and freezing. Art by Moskos.
JD EMMANUEL - ECHOES FROM ANCIENT CAVES,
[SA018, ed. of 200]
A reissue of an under-heard classic from the Space Wizard himself. A true honor to put this back on cassette. From the mouth of the man:
"Created in 1980-81, this album continues my mix of electronics and jazz. The instrumentation on this album was a Crumar Traveler 1 organ, Yamaha CS-15 Synthesizer, Octave Cat Synthesizer, Yairi DY-74 acoustic guitar with an Echoplex EP-4, Ross Phaser pedal and a DOD Compressor/Limiter pedal. A Teac 4 channel reel deck was used for the multi-tracked recording.
Side one starts with a tape loop using the Crumar Organ mixed with wind chimes and birds that were recorded live. The next two pieces were created with acoustic guitar and synthesizer. The final piece is using the organ.
Greg Kelly, exceptional guitarist friend of mine, plays the acoustic guitar on Memories of Atlantis, which we co-wrote.
Side two is all multi-tracked organ and synthesizers."
Ascendent, crystallized tones from High Wolf. Calm, mantric expansions, burning at the center. France's finest in contemporary psych, art by Max. The man is traveling the USA, check his TOUR DATES.
HOLD THE PHONE - ON SAFE BREEZES, [SA010, ed. of 150]
HOLD THE PHONE is mustard and ketchup on a deviled egg. HOLD THE PHONE is your dad whistling at a 16-year-old girl. HOLD THE PHONE is yin all dressed up in yang clothes.
HOLD THE PHONE is Woodstock yelling at Snoopy.
HOLD THE PHONE is Cameron Stallones and Barret Avner. HOLD THE PHONE is two boys talkin'.
Los Angeles master of analog video synthesis Miko Revereza spent a late night navigating the fungal canyons of the SUN ARAW/MATTHEWDAVID LIVEPHREAXXX collaboration, and presented this document of his voyage through the A side of the original tape. Truly some of the most beautiful examples of his video feedback work, endlessly folding, endlessly bubbling, revealing the organic, regenerative heart that who-knew lurked in this technology, all washed in gorgeous pastels. This is really special.
SADISTIC CANDLE - SADISTIC CANDLE, [SA011, ed. of 100]
SADISTIC CANDLE is straight from the heart of a man, broadcast from an expanse of quilted bedroom somewhere deep in Los Angeles, fueled with the dust hanging motionless in window-light over a stack of Hawkwind LPs, made crooked by the pure-hearted trickster, sighing with troubadour spirit, revealed with a 4-track. A statement of purpose.
RIGHTEOUS ACID - MELLOW DOSES, [SA013, ed. of 150]
Stately Thai boogie, swaying and sealed in Bakersfield sun. Righeous Acid is Alex Sarad, unleashing this his first c30 of deeply mantric and contemplative fretboard meditations with a depth of soul that vacillates from bleached temple rhythms to bayou sweat in an instant. Sensitive and glowing from within.
Hookworms fling themselves headlong into classic 80's/90's psych-rock like they're trying to break something. Hailing from Leeds and cramming themselves giddily within the well established formal properties of the genre, they walk the scorched road behind Loop, Spectrum, and any other titan of two-chord songs who's ever slowly wah-ed a chord until they saw colors. Most excellent burners!
